They’re Betting on People – Sent Everyone to Board Training with Aider

Nova Consulting-1

For the Norwegian IT consulting company NOVA Consulting Group, it has always been important that employees are represented on the board. So why not offer all staff the opportunity to enhance their board skills? – Increased knowledge about board work benefits the entire organization, says CEO Geir Allan Hove.

The philosophy of having employee-elected board members has been in place since the company was founded in 2007. According to Hove, it’s not just about ensuring that everyone feels their interests are represented, but about creating a more complete picture of reality.

– It’s the employees who ultimately have their finger on the pulse. A CEO can tell me how things stand, but I always turn to an employee-elected board member to see if they agree with that assessment. After all, they sit closest to their colleagues, he says.

Enormous Interest

When a 40 percent gender quota for boards was introduced as a formal requirement, Hove saw it as a golden opportunity: by running an internal board course, they could ensure that more employees felt confident in a potential board role. This would also allow them to cultivate more diverse and highly competent candidates.

– We therefore sent an invitation to all 430 of our employees in Norway. Those interested in learning more about board work could apply to participate in the course, he explains.

And the response? Even greater than Hove and the leadership team had dared to hope for – from both women and men.

– Interest was so high that we had to run three separate course rounds to accommodate everyone. I don’t think all participants necessarily had ambitions to become employee-elected board members, but they wanted to better understand how a board functions. Having more people gain deeper insight into these processes is only a good thing.

New Opportunities

After thorough research into various course providers, the CEO chose the competence house Aider.

– Many operate with fixed course packages, whereas we wanted a high degree of customization. That flexibility and expertise was with Nina, who could adapt a module to be part of a series of courses, says Hove.

He is referring to Nina Stokke Tronsrud, Senior Manager at Aider. She had the pleasure of leading the course titled “Value-Creating Board Work” for NOVA’s employees across three rounds.

– The gender balance requirement was perhaps the starting point, but Geir was clear that this was about developing the employees. And I believe we have succeeded. The response has certainly been overwhelmingly positive, with participants saying the course has given them both new insight and new opportunities, says Stokke Tronsrud.

– Naturally, it was important for us to find a partner we resonate with. Aider shares our values, and we know and respect each other. There really was no other option.

Aiming to Be the Best Workplace in the World

The course leader also noticed that participants were not necessarily aiming for a board role within NOVA Consulting Group, but valued the transferable skills for roles outside the company.

– Many participants hold positions in other organizations, housing associations, or sports clubs, and a typical feedback is that this course makes them more confident in those roles. That’s how we succeed in fostering lasting growth and development. Additionally, there’s an element of employer branding in being an employer that supports you in serving on boards elsewhere, she explains.

For CEO Hove, it comes down to what he calls NOVA’s core principle: creating “the best workplace in the world.”

– We are certainly not there yet, but we won’t get there without listening to our employees, and this will give them an even more qualified voice. It has been amazing to see satisfied employees sharing new knowledge, learning, and understanding. All credit to Nina for an incredibly rewarding program, Hove concludes.

– Next time, I think I’ll participate myself.
