Summer is approaching, and it’s the perfect time to strengthen board work and ensure the organisation is well prepared for the autumn. Here are 8 concrete recommendations for boards and management teams looking to use June strategically.

1. Conduct a simple mid-year evaluation

Take a step back before the holidays begin:

  • Has the board followed up on strategic decisions?

  • Is the organisation on track with its objectives?

  • What should be adjusted before autumn?

A quick mid-year review provides valuable insights and forms the basis for an effective second half of the year.

2. Ensure signing authority and delegations over the holiday period

When key personnel are away, someone must still be able to sign and approve decisions. Make sure that signing rights and necessary delegations are in place – this can save time and prevent unnecessary challenges during the summer months.

3. Gain an overview of the organisation’s risks

Do not head into the holiday period without an updated risk assessment. Ask the CEO or CFO to provide a brief summary of the most significant risks. The board is responsible for awareness and preparedness – even in July.

4. Plan the autumn board meeting now

Avoid a chaotic calendar after the holidays. Set the date for the first board meeting in August/September now – and send out a save the date. This creates clarity and predictability.

5. Evaluate board performance – simple and effective

Ask the board:

  • What has worked well so far this year?

  • What can be improved?

Send out two questions via Teams or email. It takes no more than 10 minutes and provides valuable insight into board efficiency and improvement potential.

6. Check data security – even from the cabin

Many log in while on holiday. Ensure the organisation has clear guidelines on data security, GDPR, and the use of personal devices. The board holds overall responsibility for safe digital operations – all year round.

7. Send a summer greeting from the board

A simple and personal summer message to employees or shareholders can strengthen culture and relationships. It demonstrates appreciation, presence – and builds confidence in the board’s role.

8. Prepare the board for the third quarter

Use June to:

  • Update strategic objectives

  • Clarify action plans

  • Prepare the organisation for a focused autumn

Effective governance starts with proper preparation.

Board work does not need to be complicated – it simply needs to be well thought through.
